Gill Estate / Sunraysia, VIC

91

The Gill family arrived in Australia in 2005, today running a well established farm of some 2500 acres growing almonds, citrus, avocadoes, mangoes, and of course, wine grapes.  The acquisition of the former Deakin Estate winery (not brand) furnished well established wine production facilities, though the family has only recently moved to bottling their own wines outside of contract work.  Vines are a short distance from Mildura, in the Sunraysia sub-region of the Murray-Darling GI, with winemaking handled by Janel Carruthers, whose CV includes significant time with Treasury/Penfolds and Pernod Ricard.

To put it bluntly, wines at these price points have no business being this good, across both Gentle Giant and Rivah offerings.  We’ve jumped at the chance to add these to our range, with freshness, purity and varietal correctness shining through at levels far beyond the modest price points.

  • Gill Estate Gentle Giant Chardonnay 2024

    $ 15.00 incl. GST

    Unoaked, and daft as it is to say, tastes like Chardonnay!  (Have sampled many lean wines which eschew varietal character).  Toast and cashew nut flavours derived of lees work, peaches and yellow fruits on the palate, decent energy and impressive length considering its level here.  A lick of grapefruit rounds out the finish, pure and clean.

  • Gill Estate Gentle Giant Cabernet Sauvignon 2024

    $ 15.00 incl. GST

    Bright and red fruited, an easy BBQ style.  Ginger and jam biscuits, pronounced but fine tannins, fruits of the forest, red currants, a dot of sweet red capsicum and a leafy element to round things out. Chillable even, a pleasing juiciness and just the right amount of tannic chew.

  • Gill Estate Gentle Giant Shiraz 2024

    $ 15.00 incl. GST

    Bursts with red and blue fruits around a soft, bright and juicy palate.  Baking spice, blackberry jam and a slightly sweet fruited element make this a friendly style, its finish balancing out with a decent hand of savoury tannins.

  • Gill Estate Rivah Sauvignon Blanc 2024

    $ 21.00 incl. GST

    Fresh and exactly what one expects from Sauvignon, minus the vegetal/cat pee elements.  Gooseberry, a hint of grassiness but restrained, giving it decent sessionability.  Bright and juicy in the mouth revealing passionfruit, a flinty edge, and varietal bittering phenolics to close.

  • Gill Estate Rivah Pinot Grigio 2024

    $ 21.00 incl. GST

    Well made and balanced, and enough character here to push back against the neutrality of many an entry level Grigio.  Pear drops and green melon, a glycerol element giving the palate decent weight and texture, with just a hint of banana ester to give lift and presence.

  • Gill Estate Rivah Rosé 2023

    $ 21.00 incl. GST

    100% Syrah.  Highly aromatic, bramble and red fruit.  Technically dry but with some fruit brightness, small red berries (cranberry, strawberry and pomegranate), with a speck of iodine mineral to balance.

  • Gill Estate Rivah Malbec 2021

    $ 21.00 incl. GST

    A lovely medium-bodied iteration of the variety here.  Juicy and red fruited, blood plums, amaro/orange peel, cherries, Turkish delight, and decent length.  Would work with a light chill or ambient, a great introduction to this meat-friendly grape.

  • Gill Estate Rivah Tempranillo 2024

    $ 21.00 incl. GST

    We’ve found Temp can be a little ferrous and bloody on occasion, though appealing styles (to our palate at least) pack in blue fruit and fruitcake, which is here in spades.  Violet aromatics, berry compote, all wrapped up in a juicy medium bodied package, rounding out with grainy tannins and as per the rosé, a dot of that medicinal iodine for some balance and complexity.
