A long search for properly dry, great value German Rieslings has led us to the wines of Familie Rauen, replete with invigorating energy and purity.

The well established property boasts first-rate sites along the Mosel, with organically managed vines rooted in light slate soils.  The winery is located in Thörnich, with land holdings in Detzemer Maximiner Klosterlay, Detzemer Würzgaten, and Thörnicher Ritsch. Four generations of the family actively participate in the winemaking process.  We are over the moon to introduce these brilliant Rieslings to Australia.

  • Familie Rauen Riesling Trocken 2024

    $ 39.00 incl. GST

    Classic down the line German Riesling.  A broad fruit spectrum of apples, ripe citrus, white peach, white florals, and white pepper.  Refreshing with decent length.  Smoke/flint notes to finish, lovely balance overall.  Drinks deceptively lower than its 5.7g/L residual sugar.  Think of it as the “German Dry” option.

    “Notes of ginger and dried hay, lemon blossom scents, hints of dusty herbs. Very slate-y, lemon-driven, bitter lemon and bitter grapefruit. Straightforward and simple in a way, but in a good Riesling-way.” 90 points, Kasia Sobiesiak, Winefront

  • Familie Rauen Riesling Kabinett Trocken 2024

    $ 42.00 incl. GST

    Leads with a light, alluring nose of florals, pineapple, nuttiness/ground nuts.  Wicked mineral intensity across the palate, with slate, pineapple, Eau de Coing (quince liqueur), and green herbs.  Its textural, satisfyingly energetic finish shows a poke of salinity.  3.3g/L residual sugar.

    “Bone dry (as a palate perception, as on paper 3.3g/L RS). Lifted and fresh wine with lime and green apple, green kiwi, gooseberry and a hint of brine mingling with a note of honey. The palate is dusty, with a lemon-honey tea aftertaste. It all works very well together, a bit understated perhaps, but charming too.” 92 points, Kasia Sobiesiak, Winefront

  • Familie Rauen Riesling M Halbtrocken 2024

    $ 42.00 incl. GST

    Gnarly volcanic-rock minerals meets fruit.  Olive oil aromas, alongside pineapple, ripe peaches/apricots, fabulous energy and drive; this is so beautifully balanced between a little fruit sweetness and its mineral energy.  11.2g/L residual sugar.

    “Apple, lemon, pear and white nectarine. Quite subtle nose, nothing wrong with that. The acidity perception is high even though it’s a ‘half-dry’ style (11.2g/L RS). Refreshment and appeal come in the form of sweet-sour green apple and lime with sugar, or ripe pomelo. Good balance of simple pleasures. Match with spicy food comes to mind, and well-chilled.” 90 points, Kasia Sobiesiak, Winefront

  • Familie Rauen Riesling Kirschenberg Alte Rebe Trocken 2024

    $ 48.00 incl. GST

    More obvious weight and roundness from this older vine cuvée.  Abundant aromatics and flavours of moscatels, quince paste, honey and honeysuckle, but again maintains energy and spot-on exotic fruit brightness to dryness.  Creamy and lifted, ripe and bright, with lovely acid and mineral cut.  So much intensity versus harmony and drinkability.  3.7g/L residual sugar.

    “Value Mosel. It starts very citrusy with a top note of honeyed flowers, meringue, lime and a touch of green mango. It’s based on all things lemon: blossom, skin, pith, juice. Lemon tea with sour apple and bitter citrus skins. Texture is slippery upfront and with subtle dusty traction in the back. Minerally and savoury wine built around acidity. Hits the Riesling spot well.” 93 points, Kasia Sobiesiak, Winefront

  • Familie Rauen Maxim Riesling Spätlese 2024

    $ 48.00 incl. GST

    A good spätlese Riesling has to be at the upper end of hedonistic vinous indulgence – is ‘ohohohohoh nom nom nom’ a valid tasting note?  For correctness: lemon sherbert, a huge flavour spectrum between bass of volcanic mineral and high notes of lemons, blossoms, sherbert, even some boiled lolly notes.  Obvious fruit but not ragingly sweet, this is super seductive, with buzzing acid and insane energy. 73.2g/L residual sugar.

    “Showing distinct ripeness: pineapple skin, some dried mango and candied lemon zest. The palate is undoubtedly sweet but with a great cleansing acidity, something a la lemon lolly. It’s a sweet wine with well-built-in fruit richness offset by driving Riesling acidity. Good!” 92 points, Kasia Sobiesiak, Winefront
