Organic Côtes Du Rhône Villages From The Rarely Seen Terroir Of Visan

Domaine La Florane is an exciting find which further broadens the options of excellent Southern Rhône wines available in Australia. The 35 hectare property is situated on a south-facing slope at the highest point of the Visan appellation (elevation is 195 – 320 metres), viticulture is certified organic (biodynamic practice) and the winery has been purpose built to maximize use of gravity, with wines matured in wood and concrete. A key philosophy is that no stylistic blending is practiced at the estate – the same blocks make up the same cuvées each year, showcasing the season.

Few Visan wines are seen in Australia. The hilly village is located around 10km north of Cairanne, with vines grown in clay-limestone soils. Domaine La Florane’s terroir is gravelly and scattered with large round pebbles; its aspect and high limestone content coupled with the steady mistral wind raises wines of freshness and invigorating natural acidity. Visan was granted Côtes du Rhône Villages appellation status in 1966.

  • Domaine la Florane A Fleur red 2022

    $ 38.00 incl. GST

    85%-ish Grenache, 10% Syrah, last few % Carignan and Cinsault, from soils with a higher clay component.  Wild fermented in tank, then aged in concrete on fine lees before bottling.

    Fun, bright, fresh, juicy – a wine of boovability, or what we Aussies would call a smasher.

    “Ripe scents, maybe some stewed fruit but immediately you get lavender and the garrigue type of mixed herb-spice bouquet and braised meat. It’s plummy and earthy, with black liquorice sweetness and warming spice lingering in the back. It’s plush juice with firm tannins and iron stone as the lasting impression. As a whole, it delivers the goods.”  92 points, Kasia Sobiesiak, Winefront

  • Domaine La Florane A Fleur Rosé 2022

    $ 38.00 incl. GST

    Côtes du Rhône. Cinsault, Grenache, Syrah.

    Made from blocks grown specifically for rosé, a perky and fresh expression of what the Southen Rhône is capable of for pink styles, a world away from the deeply hued, fruit driven Tavel styles. A similar weight and feel to good Provence rosé, though more a watermelon juice and citrus fruit spectrum, stony rather than saline mineral. Beautifully perfumed with supreme tension, a magnificent seafood wine.

  • Domaine La Florane A Fleur White 2023

    $ 39.00 incl. GST

    Grenache Blanc with Marsanne, Roussanne, Burboulenc, Clairette and Viognier.  Wild fermented and raised in concrete vats, aged briefly on fine lees.

    Aromatics and flavours of white blossom, apricot, peach and grapefruit, with some citrus rind and pith bitterness to balance.  Mid-weight and with some decent texture, a stony mineral edge giving cut and definition.  Fresh and energetic throughout, with great pithy length.

  • Domaine la Florane Je Ne Souffre Plus no sulphur red 2023

    $ 39.00 incl. GST

    50/50 Syrah and Grenache, natural ferment in stanless and aged five months in concrete tanks, with no sulphur added.

    Plum jam, purple flowers, crushed rocks lead the aromatics.  Strawberries, blackberry and orange peel add to the palate, alongside a sanguine quality, though it’s texture that defines this wine.  Crisp tannins sketch its structure with clarity, with a rawness that for us defines non added sulphur wines.  Important to note too that fastidious hygiene and attention ensures stability, with this drinking fine up to three days open.  A relatively new cuvée for the estate only released after numerous years of trial wines, each release only gets better and better.
