Chateau Montfin / Corbières

A Corbières Estate Of Depth And Distinction

An engineer and an accountant, father and son Raymond and Jérôme Esteve purchased the Montfin property from its bankrupt owners in 2001, having fallen immediately in love with the estate’s stunning setting on the lagoon of Peyriac-de-Mer. Construction of a state of the art winery quickly followed, and today the estate is managed full time by Jérôme, largely self taught in the arts of winemaking and grape growing.

Certified organic since 2009, the remainder of the estate is covered in bushes of garrigue and increasing plantings of olive and oak trees, with Jérôme aiming to increase his site’s biodiversity, and some hope of the latter yielding truffles one day. The vineyard is almost entirely old vine, with plantings dating up to 80 years and producing intense, concentrated fruit. Appellation laws dictate a maximum of 50% plantings of Carignan, Corbières’ signature variety (this limit controversial among many growers!)

  • Château Montfin Carignena 2017

    $ 30.00 incl. GST

    40% Carignan, 30% Carignan carbonically macerated and 30% Grenache

    Think of this as southern Beaujolais. Vibrant dark ruby red in colour, a rippling, slurping style which leaps from the glass.  Cherries, plums and sweet spices flow around a medium palate weight, softened further by the sheer juiciness of this style.  Earthen flavours complex the fruitiness, guzzlable Southern French joy which works beautifully as a warm weather red.

  • Château Montfin Blanc 2017

    $ 33.00 incl. GST

    60% Grenache Blanc, 20% Vermentino and 20% Roussanne

    A textural white with gentle acid, characterised by complex fruits and mouthfeel.  Exotic aromatics of florals, apricot, mango and citrus, with palate continuing these themes, the mouthfeel full and with impressions of natural fruit tannin.  Fruit is balanced by some dried herbal notes and tiny lick of iodine-like minerality providing further complexity.  Great drinking on its own or will complement a wide range of foods, from grilled vegetables or fish to shellfish and even spicy dishes.

  • Château Montfin Vincent No Sulphur Red 2018

    $ 40.00 incl. GST

    85% Grenache, 15% Carignan.

    With Montfin’s reds continuing on a path of pretty and juicy stylings around lo-fi winemaking, Jérôme takes it a step further here with a proper no sulphur red.  Carbonic maceration gives a juiciness, and in the spectum of these styles, this is cleanly fruited and highly gluggable.  Currant, raspberry, Ribena and dark berries a-plenty here, with a coriander-esque herbal note, the tannins giving an ever so slightly raw edge to the wine.  The end result is less about production methods here, more about fruit driven deliciousness.
