Domaine de l'Enchantoir / Saumur

1124

Purchased in 2016 by the dynamic Brunet family, an estate raising pristine cuvées of Chenin Blanc and Cabernet Franc.  Viticulture is certified organic, with minimal adds in the winery.  As a set all wines show a lovely balance between fruit, texture and some awesome minerality, particularly contrasting through the three reds.

The area has a colourful history, with the chalk soils tunnelled extensively during the Second World War as hiding for the French resistance; it’s not uncommon for the ground to give way on occasion and sink a tractor.  The estate also offers two reds under the relatively new appellation of Saumur Puy-Notre-Dame, which are renowned for more intense and long-lived expressions.

  • Domaine de l’Enchantoir l’Ilot des Biches 2020

    $ 52.00 incl. GST

    100% Cabernet Franc, grown on Jurassic flint and ironstone soils.  Grapes are partially destemmed, with a portion seeing carbonic maceration.  The wine is fermented and raised in concrete vats, made this vintage with zero sulphur additions.

    Clean and concentrated, deeply ruby in colour, it leads with pronounced black fruits and spice.  A lovely spread of fruits on the palate, fresh with a nice natural tannic grip and a brush of flinty mineral.

  • Domaine de l’Enchantoir Turbulente Sparkling 2020

    $ 55.00 incl. GST

    70% Chardonnay and 30% Chenin blanc grown over the tufa – chalky limestone of Saumur.  Technically made as a Pétillant Naturel and referred to as such by the producer, though ideologically drinks more like a high quality classic French sparkling.

    Fine bubbles, a nervy attack with weight building on the finish.  Autolysis notes of breadcrust and yeast, though overwhelmingly a fresh and fruit led style.

    Black cherry in colour, complexity dialing up here.  Loads of black fruits and black pepper, wrapped around bright silky tannins and a pinpoint mineral texture.

  • Domaine de l’Enchantoir Clos du Petit Chavannes 2017

    $ 77.00 incl. GST

    100% Cabernet Franc, grown on tufa (chalky limestone).  Fermented in concrete vats and aged in seasoned oak for 12 months.  Saumur Puy-Notre-Dame appellation.

    Ruby colour, this is deep.  Aromas of violets, jammy fruit, black forest berries and a broad spice spectrum.  An impression of just-ripeness, not green but a finely tread balance which makes this quiet captivating.  Awesome length and mineral energy.
