First shipment of this gorgeous Pinot Noir and Gamay blend, an historically significant style. All estate-grown from 1965 and 1980 plantings, fermented in stainless steel and rested in seasoned oak.
A vibrant violet shade, with purple flowers on the nose, and a plethora of fruits of the cherry, raspberry and plum spectrum. The gamay component provides a nice mineral/tannin backbone, though slurpability and fun are paramount here, a fresh and fruit-driven style and an easy companion to snacks, cheeses and barbecues.
“Ripe, purple and blue fruited wine of succulence and density, with a violet and liquorice perfume, maybe some earthy coffee grounds too. Fleshy and full of flavour, silty and sooty tannin, some ‘mineral’ acidity, and a robust finish of good length. Oof. This is pretty good, and fun to drink. How could Felix not import Domaine Félix? Namesakes aside, this family estate is a big tick alongside the increasingly rare paradigm of good value and high quality Burgundy.
Tracing winemaking history back to the 1600s, today’s phase of the Félix family’s operation took root in 1981 with Hervé Félix taking over the domaine. Holdings quickly expanded from 11 to 31 hectares, bottling was now done at the domaine, and vineyard chemical use was greatly reduced, to culture raisonée methodology (chemicals only used when absolutely necessary to save a crop) from the early 2000s. The winery is based in Saint-Bris, with vineyard holdings spread through the Yonne department, taking in Côtes d’Auxerre and Petit Chablis, plus Irancy and Saint-Bris (Sauvignon Blanc).
Son Olivier Félix is stepping up to take over running of the estate, and with the quality of the wines quietly taking a turn upwards, we’re particularly happy with the current set of releases, and pleased to finally bring in their excellent Passe-Tout-Grains Pinot Noir/Gamay blend.
