A New Label From Experienced Hands

Duncan Ferguson and Susana Fernandez earned note and acclaim during their time at Cascabel, McLaren Vale, a label renowned for alternative varieties. Having sold the operation and seeking a change, the couple relocated to the Huon Valley in southern Tasmania, with a vision for true cool climate viticulture.

While the new estate’s plantings become established, fruit has been sourced from good local growers to comprise this first release Pinot Noir, with a Chardonnay soon to follow. Ethos is toward wines of elegance and perfume, and we are delighted to introduce this new chapter of the Ferguson and Fernandez winemaking journey.

  • Altaness Pet Nat 2021

    $ 36.00 incl. GST

    Altaness Wines presents our exciting new sparkling wine: Pétillant Naturel.

    Pétillant Naturel or Pet Nat is a handcrafted and ancestral type of sparklingwine. Naturally bubbly, Pet Nat is made by promptly bottling a fermenting wine that is in the last stages of the primary alcoholic fermentation, with the aim of retaining a few of those gentle bubbles that are remnant from fermentation.

    Altaness Wines’ Pet Nat has been finessed by master winemaker, Susana Fernandez from handpicked grapes grown in the Huon Valley in Tasmania. The striking cherry red hue of the wine is owed to the blend of Pinot Noir and a small portion of Chardonnay juice co-fermented with their natural indigenous yeast.

    An eclectic mix of flavours including watermelon, cherries and strawberries with an underlying brush of crisp acidity and bubble, a crunchy and savoury finishing style.  Sealed with crown cap, total production 140 dozen.

  • Altaness Pinot Noir 2018

    $ 50.00 incl. GST

    Minimally handled to express place, this is a ravishing Pinot with an amazing energy.  Handpicked and wild fermented with 30% whole bunches, and no additions bar minimal sulphur dioxide.  Two weeks on skins before spending 14 months in French oak barrels, 25% new, then naturally settled in tank and bottled unfiltered.

    Just wow.  Incredible complexity, the kind of wine you can riff on for hours as it opens in the glass.  Cloves, twigs, pine, sandalwood, mushrooms, forest floor, ferrous notes…. and that’s just the nose.  These themes continue through the pallet, with layers of savoury fruit, black and forest berries, smoked and fresh meats, an amazing flavour spectrum, rounding out with fine pinpoint tannins, and invigorating natural acidity.  Multi-layered, and very much a food wine.
